Tempe, Arizona - Arizona-based Industrial Fiber Optics (IFO) has taken the U.S. lead in manufacturing and marketing fiber optic coupler/splitters for plastic optical fiber. The passive devices distribute optical signals from one or more input fibers into two or more output optical fibers.
Applications for the splitters/couplers range from computer local area networks and automotive electronics to wavelength multiplexing and sensor systems.
Because the couplers are passive devices and consume no electrical power, they are immune to electromagnetic influence and do not add noise to system designs. In addition, they are: bi-directional, operationally independent of wavelength, insensitive to operating temperatures, and easier to work with than glass.
IFO's proprietary manufacturing process produces reliable, very-low-cost devices available in a wide range of styles and sizes that split or combine light with minimal loss. Standard description of the coupler is M x N (M input ports and N output ports). The standard product line is based on jacketed fiber cable with a 1 mm core, although products can be customized for other fiber core diameters. They can be fabricated with custom fiber lengths and/or with terminations of all types.
Multiple models with various input and output port and splitting options are stocked at the factory for immediate shipment. Prices depend on quantity, but in all cases are much less than those of comparable products previously available only from Asia. Prices also are significantly less than costs of comparable multi-mode glass fiber couplers. Quantities as small as 1 are available - with a lead time of three weeks or less - for less than $30 per unit. These new, price-busting coupler/splitters are available from distributors and, for OEM customers, direct from Industrial Fiber Optics.
