Chromis optical fiber and cable is the next generation of plastic optical fiber. It—s a graded index polymer optical fiber (GI-POF) made from a perfluorinated polymer. The polymer has much better optical transmission at the conventional infrared wavelengths used for optical data communications, when compared to PMMA step-index fibers. Demonstrations have been made at data rates up to 10 G. The real advantage of this fiber over silica (glass) fiber is that it has the ease of termination inherent to all polymer core optical fibers.
